Sphynx cat and moon on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A seated hairless sphynx cat faces forward with large ears and dark, solid eyes, set in front of a crescent moon and soft cloud shapes. The subject is built from fine stippled dots, with shading that gives the cat's body and the moon its volume. The image shows two close-up views of the same piece in black and grey on pale skin.

Nell would not come off the coal scuttle that night, though you rattled the pilchard tin and called her by the name the street had given her, Duchess, because she sat like one and had no hair to hide it. Her skin was the colour of cold dough and she held her ears up like two sails, turned towards the pithead on the hill, where the lamps were moving slowly down the winding wheel.

Your father was on the back shift. The moon hung over the tip the way it does in November, half lit, with clouds drifting across it like steam off a kettle. Mrs Probert from across the lane had said at the chapel tea that a cat which sits facing the mine knows the firedamp before the fireman does, and you had laughed, because you were eleven and laughing cost nothing.
At half past two the cat stood up. She stretched, long and grey-pink, then walked down off the scuttle and out through the flap, which she had never done in the four years she had lived with you. You followed her into the yard with the lamp. She stopped at the wall, sat with her tail wrapped around her feet, and stared back at you with eyes as black as the shaft, black all the way through.
The hooter went at ten to three. Nobody was killed, though the men on the lower level came up early with their faces grey, and the rescue crew said afterwards the air had failed for twenty minutes. Your father walked in at dawn, put his hand on your head, and found Nell asleep on the warm step, the moon already gone down behind the tip.
