Stacked circles and dots on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical line of black circles and dots runs down the inner forearm, starting with a small solid dot and a thin ring with a centre dot, then a larger double ring with a solid centre, a solid disc, and a short descending row of small dots. The linework is crisp and the circles are filled or outlined in solid black ink with no shading. The design is centred on the forearm against plain skin, with the hand visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Tomas had been sending the pass signal for eleven winters, and his hands had learned it the way other men learn hymns. A dot for a clear road, a ring for a cart that could take the bend, a double ring with its solid heart for the doctor's gig alone, a full disc for shut. He stood on the flat stone above Cwm Dulas with the mirror-board balanced on his knee, the wind slicing the cold off the scree, and watched the valley through the brass glass.

Below him the snow had come in overnight, not much, but enough that the lower road would be a grave by noon. The valley answered his first dot with a flash from the chapel roof, then nothing. He sent the ring for the bend, then the centre dot for the ford. Still nothing. Someone down there had not slept.
Then a light came back from the mill: a single dot, then a row of four small ones, the old way of asking for the whole sequence again. Tomas laughed into his scarf. He sent it all from the top, slowly, the disc last, and kept his thumb on the shutter until his knuckles ached.
The final answer was a flat hand raised at the byre gate, which meant the doctor had already gone up with the carrier. Tomas lowered the board. The road would hold a while longer, and somebody would still be on it when the light went.
