A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair came to Marrow Common every October with its painted horses and its tent of two-headed calves, and every October the fairfolk packed up and rolled on before the first frost. One year a girl called Ada stayed behind. She had a lame foot, and the caravans would not wait for her to mend it, so when the last wagon turned into the lane she was left sitting on a upturned crate with a bundle at her knees and a sprig of bay she had pulled from a hedge.

The village wives brought her broth and asked where she meant to go. The steward, a grey man named Pell, offered to walk her to the next town, but Ada only shook her head and took a stick and drew a house in the dirt. She drew the walls, the pitched roof, the door. Then she cut a turf from the ditch, set the bay sprig upright in the south wall, and laid a round stone at the corner for the sun to rest in. The village laughed at her, and then, as the nights turned cold, they brought hurdles and mud and straw, and the house went up around her.

The winter was hard and the house kept out the wind. In spring the bay put out new leaves, which people said was a poor thing for a cutting from a hedge, but it grew anyway. The fair came back the next October and the horses turned in at the lane, and the showmen found smoke coming from a chimney where no chimney had been. Pell walked out to meet them. He looked at the green sprig in the wall and understood that the fair had been moving so long it had forgotten it could stop. He took off his hat and sat on Ada's step, and he did not get up again. Nobody after that thought to ask him to leave.
