Cartoon cat with red bow and script quote on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon cat character with a red bow is drawn in black outline on the forearm, with its face shown by two dots and whiskers. Beside it, a line of cursive script runs diagonally across the arm in black ink, with a small red heart at the end. The black linework is clean and the red fill appears only on the bow, against plain skin and a dark background.

Mrs Okonedo had not spoken to Walter Pryce since the spring the marrow took over his side of the fence, and by August the two plots had become a cold war of sprawling vines and sharp remarks over the hedge. Then the cat arrived. It was a small white thing with a red bow tied behind one ear, and nobody in Harrow Lane could say whose it was. It strolled along the path between their beds each morning as if it had been sent to inspect them.

Walter tried to shoo it off with a rake handle. Mrs Okonedo left saucers of milk on the wall and pretended she had not. Within a fortnight the cat had sat on her compost heap, slept in his wheelbarrow, and once, to the fury of both of them, chased a blackbird straight through the sweet pea row. Each time one of them swore at it, the other heard and said nothing, but both of them had begun watching the gate.
On the first frosty morning of September, Walter found the cat curled under his greenhouse bench, shivering, and he carried it across the grass without thinking. Mrs Okonedo was already at her back door with the kettle going. She took the bundle from him and said the bow had come loose and wanted fixing. He said he had a spare ribbon in the shed. It was the longest conversation they had managed in four years.
By spring there was a gap cut in the fence just wide enough for a cat, and a small red ribbon knotted to the post on each side. Neither of them would say who had tied them.
