Stacked roses with swirling vines

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows several open roses with layered petals, stacked vertically and joined by curling vine stems, leaves and spiral scrolls. The linework is a uniform black outline with no shading or fill, so it reads as a stencil-ready design. It is rendered in black and white on a plain background, with a tall, roughly symmetrical composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomas had been told the rose wall would take the boy if he cut the vine before Michaelmas, so he went up the ladder at the end of the Pennyworth orchard with a billhook through his belt, while his sister shouted from below that it was too late in the year for such nonsense.

The wall was old brick, and the roses had grown over it for longer than anyone in the village could say. Their stems had split the mortar and wound up through the apple boughs, and at the top they opened in great stacked heads, one above another, the petals layered like the skirts of women at a wedding. Between them the vines curled into scrolls as tight as a watch spring. Nobody picked fruit from the trees nearest the wall. The old woman who kept the orchard said the roses ate the sweetness out of anything they touched.

He reached the top and found the boy sitting in the gutter with his knees drawn up, a boy with no shoes and a face like a dried plum. "You are late," the boy said, and Tomas felt the cold in his hands that comes before a bad decision. "The roses keep count of who comes. Every year someone must cut one bloom and carry it down to the water."

Tomas took the billhook to the lowest vine. It bled sap the colour of weak tea. Below him the orchard lay quiet, the pears going soft in the grass, and when the bloom fell into his arms it weighed no more than a hen's egg. He climbed down slowly. When he looked back the wall was bare brick and the boy was gone, but his sister had a fresh apple in her apron that had not been there before, and it tasted of nothing but rain.
