Stag and mountain landscape in a diamond frame
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A stag stands in silhouette on a riverbank below a large mountain peak, with pine trees on either side and clouds drifting above. The landscape is built from stippled dotwork shading and solid black linework, sitting in a diamond shape with a lotus-like mandala at the base. The image is in black and grey with no colour ink, and the three panels show the same tattoo from different angles.

The stag came down to the river on the third night of the blizzard, when the snow had buried the stable door to the handle and Father had given up on the road to Carrow. I saw it from the scullery window, a shape cut out of the dusk, antlers held high as though it carried the whole pass on them.

Nobody else at the Hollin Inn had seen it. The guests were a cloth merchant with frostbitten toes, two sisters who sang hymns badly, and a surveyor named Tobias Quayle who spent his evenings sketching peaks on the backs of his bills. He drew the mountain for me on a napkin, its shoulder cut by a streak of cloud, and asked whether the river ever froze solid. I told him it froze at the bends and ran black between them, which was true.
On the fourth night his bed was empty and his boots were gone with him. The snow between the inn and the water was unmarked except for one line of hoofprints leading down. I followed them with a lantern and found him kneeling on the bank, his palm flat on the ice, watching the stag stand in the shallows with its reflection beneath it like a second animal. Below the stag the ice had frozen into rings of pale petals, the way frost blooms on a window when no one is looking.
He did not turn when I called his name. 'It isn't lost,' he said. 'It's only waiting for the thaw to show us the way down.' The stag lifted its head and walked into the pines. By morning the road was open, and Quayle had left a map on my pillow with the river drawn in one unbroken line and nothing else.
