The fishing boats are in and the gulls have given up on the harbour, so I am sitting on the step of the net loft with this paper on my knee and the lamp hissing behind me. You will laugh, but I have been down past the slipway every night this week with Mrs Gillies's torch, waiting for the bay to do its trick. Last night it finally did. Every time the oars dipped, a little green fire ran off the blades in curls, then went out.

Father would have called it the sea being showy. I stood up to my ankles in the cold and watched the water throw sparks after my feet, five or six at a time, and then a spray of them rising into the dark like the wake of something very small and in a hurry. I counted them. Five stars, most nights, if you look long enough, and always a trail behind them where the dots go.

I tried to draw it for you on the back of this page, but my pencil keeps running out and the lines came out wrong. You will have to take my word for it, or come home in October and see for yourself. The crab men say the glow comes from something too small to name, and that it only shows when the water is disturbed. I think that is a fine thing to be, too small to name but bright enough to follow.
