Black script lettering reading Stay Alive on the inner forearm, just above a black leather strap worn at the wrist.

Stay Alive script on the wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the inner forearm and wrist of a person with the words Stay Alive written in a handwritten-style black script. The linework is thin and even, with the letters joined and slightly slanted, and there is no shading. The tattoo is set centrally on the forearm against plain pale skin, with a black leather strap and buckle just below it.

Dear Ruth,

The Palais had a new bandleader in on Tuesday, a thin lad from Hull with hands like a surgeon, and he played "Begin the Beguine" so slowly that Mr Pryce had to stop dancing with the coat-check girl and sit down on the stage steps. I'm writing this on the back of the programme so you'll have something to pin above the sink. Don't laugh. I know the sink is your bit of the flat and I know you'll say I'm mooning.

Dad came in on the Thursday bus with his cap in his fist. He hasn't said a word about the letter from the Admiralty and I haven't asked. He sat at the back by the urn and let the whole hall go round him, and when the lights came up he stood, walked straight to the stage and asked the trumpet player to play anything with a bit of sway in it. Then he danced with me, badly, in his boots. Mum would have clipped him round the ear.

Your last card has been tucked into the mirror frame since it came. "Stay alive, Peg, and I'll bring you nylons." Cheeky article. I read it over the powder every morning and it makes me laugh, which I suppose is the point. So here is my reply in the same spirit. Stay alive, you daft thing. Keep your head down on the convoy and write when you can. I'll save you the last waltz, and the hall will still be standing when you get back to it.

Yours, with a smudge of lipstick on the corner, Peg
