Fine line script tattoo reading Strength, with a small heart on each side, on the inner wrist above a denim cuff.

Strength script with hearts on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A dark ink tattoo of the word Strength in flowing cursive script sits on the inner wrist, with a small solid heart at each end of the word. The lettering is thin and even, with looped strokes and a slight shadow where the ink settles into the skin. The photo is taken close up with a warm, faded tone, and the blue denim cuff of a sleeve frames the lower edge of the wrist.

The snow had been coming since noon, and the pony had stopped twice on the switchbacks below Hollin Gap. I carried the lantern, which meant I had to be sure of the path. My brother Tom walked ahead with the mail satchel strapped across his chest, counting the cairns out loud the way our father taught us, one, two, until the numbers stopped making sense.

At the refuge we found the stove already lit and a biscuit tin on the shelf with a card tucked under its lid. Someone had written one word in careful looping capitals and drawn a small heart at either end. The keeper, a thin man called Abel Rudd, said a shepherd's wife left it there every winter for whoever came over the top. Tom laughed and said it was the only sermon he had ever wanted to hear. I didn't laugh. My hands were shaking too badly to hold the cup.

We slept in our coats with the door barred. In the morning the cloud had lifted and the pass lay white and sharp under a sky like wet slate. The card was still on the shelf. I folded it into the satchel with the letters for the valley and went down first, slow, testing each step with the tip of my stick, while Tom followed without a word.

Halfway to the road I found a second set of prints in the snow beside ours, small and neat, going up. Someone had climbed out to meet us and turned back before the worst of the drifts. I stood there a while, breathing hard, and then I started down again, because the card was in my pocket and the valley was waiting for its post.
