"Mind the rope, it's still wet," Dora said, and hauled the hawser off the quay steps with both hands. Behind her the Mary Lune sat low in the harbour at Porthgwarra, her paint gone the colour of weak tea, and the gulls had already claimed her mast.

Her son Tom had been gone since March. He sailed with the pilchards and never came back up the slip, and by October the harbour master had stopped asking after him. Dora kept the net loft door open anyway, so the light fell across the boards where he used to sit cutting twine with his tongue between his teeth.

That was where she found the length of tarred cord, coiled on the bench as if he'd only stepped out for his dinner. It was one line, never cut. He'd worked it into a loop at the top, a fat round bight that pinched in at the bottom like a bell, and at the tail he'd fashioned a small anchor from a knot he had taught her when she was six. "You never cut a line you mean to keep," he'd told her, and she had thought it was the sort of thing fathers said.

She carried it down to the quay at the turn of the tide and made it fast to the iron ring, the way he always had. The swell lifted the cord and let it fall, lifted and fell, until the heart shape hung on the grey water and the little anchor bumped the stones below the wall. Dora stood there until the gulls went quiet, and then she went home to put the kettle on for two.
