Sun and yin yang tattoo on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest on white bedding, and one foot carries a fine line tattoo of a sun with rays around a yin yang circle. Small star shapes sit on the other foot, and a black braided bracelet is worn at the ankle. The ink is mostly black linework with light shading, and a rainbow of light crosses the scene, which adds faint colour to the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell was nine when her gran hung the prism in the bedroom window, a lump of cut glass on a length of green thread, and told her the sun had been sawn in half a long time ago. "Black half and white half," Gran said, tapping the sill. "They argue over who gets the bed in the mornings, so they take turns and leave a little colour behind to say sorry."

Nell did not believe her, but she checked the sheets every morning anyway. Some days there was a red stripe across the pillow, some days a green smear on the skirting board, and once a whole arc of violet that climbed the wardrobe and vanished when the kettle went on. She began keeping a tally in the back of her school jotter, next to the times the tide came in at Whitby, because she wanted to know who was winning.

The winter her gran went into the hospital in Halifax, the window stayed grey for eleven days. On the twelfth, Nell pulled the thread and carried the prism down the lane to the bench at the top of the moor, where the wind flattened the grass. She held it up, the sun came low and sharp, and the light broke across the frozen stone in a blue line, a gold line, a line of ragged rays that wouldn't keep still.

When the stars came out after, she counted seven and wrote the number down. Gran would have said the moon had let the sun have the morning. Nell thought the moon had simply been waiting for someone to look.
