Close-up of a fine-line black tattoo of a curly script word love inside an open heart on the lower abdomen, beside a belly button piercing.

Love script heart on the lower abdomen

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outline of a heart with the word love written in looping cursive across its upper curves, with a small curl extending from each side. The linework is even and uncoloured, with no shading, and the tattoo sits on tanned skin in the centre of the frame. A belly button piercing with a pink gem is visible above it, and the grey waistband of sweatpants with a blue band is at the bottom of the image.

Brother Aristo, the ink-seller at the harbour gate has finally paid what he owed, so I am sending this with the grain barge rather than trusting it to the carter who drinks. You will want to know the state of things. The shop is still stacked with Mother's jars, the reed pens are drying out, and the Gaul who rents the back room has taken to singing hymns to Isis at dawn, loudly and off key.

I miss the sea smell of home more than I expected. Tell Nicanor I have not forgotten his bet about the lighthouse lamp. I have also been practising the looping hand Master Demetrios taught us, the long capitals whose tails curl back on themselves. He says a scribe's letters should look as if they were drawn by someone with nowhere else to be. This morning I filled a whole scrap of papyrus with one word, written again and again: love. Each time the tail of the l swung out to the side like a vine searching for a wall.

The last attempt I kept. I drew a heart around the word, then added a small curl to either side of its upper edge, and sent it to Thaïs by the baker's boy. She replied with a single line saying the heart leaned too far to one side and she would decide when I returned whether it was worth keeping. Tell me she is not cruel, Aristo. Tell me the boy did not read it first. Your brother, Lysandros.
