Sunflower on the lower leg

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A single sunflower sits face-on, with sixteen orange petals arranged around a dark brown centre marked with small dots. A green stem with two leaves extends downward from the bloom. Bold black outlines define the petals, centre and leaves, and the colour is flat with minimal shading, set against plain pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Oduya carried the last good seed in a tin that had once held boot polish. She walked it up the dry riverbed to the tower at Haddon Reach, where the old mirrors still turned to catch what light got through the dust. Nobody in the valley had seen the sun clear in eleven years. They planted sunflowers anyway, because a sunflower only needs to be pointed at something bright, and the mirrors were the brightest things left.

The keeper, an old woman called Amara Vosk, took the tin and tipped it into her palm. Sixteen seeds, no more. She counted them aloud the way the valley counted everything, and said the number back like a debt: sixteen petals, as in the pictures from before, bold and simple, with black lines round every edge so the eye could find them in the murk. Then she sent Nell up the ladder with a trowel and a bucket of grey water.

Nell asked why they needed mirrors if the flowers turned anyway. Amara said a sunflower does not follow the sun at all. It follows what it remembers of the sun, and the mirrors were only there to remind it. Nell dug sixteen holes in the tower roof and cut her palms on the glass shards mixed into the soil, and she did not complain, because the keeper had said that was how the old ones did it.

In the third week a single bloom lifted its dark brown face above the dust, then another, then all sixteen, turning together toward a thin white disc that had not been there the day before. The children of Haddon Reach came up the ladder to stand under them. For the first time in eleven years their shadows fell long and black across the ground, sharp at the edges, each one with a small round head.
