Two matching sunflower tattoos on legs
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
Two sunflower tattoos sit on separate legs, one higher up near the ankle and one lower down, with the flower heads shown face on. Each has bold black outlines, yellow and ochre petals with soft shading, and a dark brown centre with a textured ring. The photograph is taken in soft indoor light on a plain light background, with both designs clearly in focus.

Mind the puddle by the fishmonger, that's where the Tuesday men leave their boots. Right, where was I? Ah yes, the seed man at the top of Mill Street. Bertrand kept his barrow under a green tarpaulin that drummed all winter like rain on a tin roof, and every April he sold packets of sunflower seed for a penny a pinch. Two girls came every spring, one from the north end of the market and one from the south, and they bought their seed in exactly matching heaps, counting the coins out loud so neither could cheat the other. They never explained themselves. They just tucked the packets under their coats and walked off in opposite directions, looking back twice before the corner.

That summer they planted in their separate back yards, one behind the chapel and one behind the tannery, and they measured their stalks every Sunday with a knotted length of string. Each swore hers would grow the tallest. July was the wettest anyone in Coldharbour Fold could remember, and Bertrand said the seed did not mind the weather one bit, which was more than could be said for the girls.
By August both flowers stood higher than the fences. Sunflowers follow the sun from morning until night, you know, swinging on their stems like a slow argument, and by the end of that month the two great heads had turned so far round that they faced the same gap in the wall. It was the broken bit between the chapel and the tannery, where a child could squeeze through if she was small and in a hurry. Bertrand saw them from the top of the lane on his way home, two gold faces in the grey wet light, looking at each other across the bricks.
So when you buy your seed, mind which way you face. And mind the drain on your way out, it's blocked again.
