Sunrise over mountains and sea on a forearm

Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A sun with broad, solid rays fills the upper forearm, with a shaded mountain peak below it. The lower forearm shows rolling sea waves with fine tonal shading and highlights. The contrast between the flat, graphic rays and the detailed, realistic water gives the piece its structure.

The ferry is late again, and you stand on the slipway at Carrick Bay with a tin of sandwiches going soft in your coat pocket. Across the water the mountain holds the first light like a breath it has not yet let go, and Dougie Pell from the chandler's is already shouting that the tide will not wait for anyone's sister.

Your father taught you to read the sea before you could read the catechism. He said the waves told you what the wind had done in the night and what it meant to do by noon. The herring boats go out in a ragged line, their wakes stitched white across the grey, and you count them the way he showed you, lips moving, until the number comes out wrong by one.

The missing boat is the Margaret Ann, and her skipper is Tom Keir, who owes you a shilling and a dance at the Whitsun hop. Nobody says the word lost. Mrs Hendry sets the kettle on the range and hums hymns that keep slipping sideways into a Hank Williams tune leaking from the wireless in the back room.

At half past seven the sun clears the peak and the whole bay goes gold at once. There, pulling through the glare with her nets dripping silver, is the Margaret Ann, her bow painted the wrong colour and Tom Keir waving his cap like a fool. You do not run. You stand very still at the edge of the water and let the light arrive.
