Right, pull your chairs in and mind the kettle, because this is the one about the mural on Carrow House and the seven heroes who nearly got stuck in the lift. Nobody believes the bit about the Wonder Woman, but Mrs Adeyemi on the fourth floor swore it on her late husband's pigeons, and she never lies about pigeons.

The residents had voted for a painting on the back wall of the car park. Gerald from the council wanted a sunset with a swan in it. The kids wanted the heroes. So Pavel, who painted the lettering on the chippy window, climbed the scaffold with a tin of bottle green, a tin of cherry red and a list of names copied out of a comic his nephew had left under the sofa. Batman went up first, because he always does. The Flash came down twice before lunch for more paint and a cup of tea he never drank.

On the Friday the wind came off the estate like a goods train, and the scaffold was left leaning against the bins. Monday morning the wall was finished. There they all stood, shoulder to shoulder, capes out, the Green Lantern ring lit up with a dab of lime that caught the sun. Superman's cape was a red so bright it made your eyes water. Nobody had seen Pavel since Thursday, and his van was still parked behind the bins with the engine ticking as it cooled.

Gerald took a photograph for the council report and then stood there a long time with the phone in his hand. In the corner, under a small black knot Pavel had painted above the bins as a joke, somebody had written in chalk: hold the lift, we're coming down. Mind your step on the stairs, all right? That's the story, and I'm not saying which of you is Pavel.
