A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The elephant came down Tallow Lane the morning the salt merchant tried to leave without paying. Its hide was dyed in spirals, indigo fading to plum and rust, and a pink frangipani was tucked above its shoulder like a bribe. Sefa, the dyer who owned it, walked behind with his hands in his sleeves, saying nothing, which was how Mirela knew he had been waiting for her.

She had come to buy the beast outright, of course. She offered her cart, eleven sacks of grey salt from the flats, and a promise of a stall on the harbour road. Sefa shook his head and pointed to the board over his door, where someone had lettered the words Forever With No Exchanges in a curl of black paint. "Once it's traded, it's traded," he said. "You take what walks away with you, and you don't come back asking for the bargain undone."

She thought she had won. The elephant followed her home that evening, leaning its weight against her gate, and she spent the night watching the spirals along its flank shift in the lamplight until they seemed to be a map of every salt road she had walked for twenty years, each bend and dry well marked in colour. By morning the frangipani had dropped onto her doorstep, and when she bent to pick it up she understood the salt had never been the price.
