Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of a cartoon cat face sits behind the ear, with a bold black outline and a red bow on top of the head. The cat has simple dot eyes and a yellow nose, with fine whiskers drawn in black. The close crop shows dark hair on the left, the ear with a small stud, and a dangling chain on the right.

The lorry's temperature needle had been creeping up since the last fuel stop, and by the time I limped into Dry Creek Junction the tarmac had gone soft under a white sun. Mae Pruitt ran the only garage for sixty miles. She wiped her hands on a rag printed with faded sunflowers, squinted at my radiator, and told me the fan belt had snapped the way most things out here do, quietly and without warning. Parts would come on the Thursday bus, if the bus came.

While I sat on an upturned crate, she fetched me a bottle of water from a cool box and sat down beside me with a tin cat on her knee. It was a money box, painted sugar-pink once and worn to grey at the ears, with a red bow tin-stamped on its head and a black outline gone soft from years of handling. She tapped the bow twice, the way some folk knock on wood, and said her husband had bought it at a Tucson flea market the summer they were first married. He had put a dollar in it every time she lost an argument with him, which she said was how she knew the cat was lying about being a good luck charm.

By dusk the fan belt was a rubber loop in a box, and Mae had decided I would not sleep in the cab with a dead engine and a bad feeling. She pressed the tin cat into my palm. Take her over the flats, she said. Bring her back on your next run and you can tell me what she saw.

I drove out at first light with the cat wedged against the windscreen, her bow catching the sunrise as the road unspooled white and empty ahead. Somewhere past the salt pans I realised I had been talking to her, and that she had not once argued.
