Tacos before vatos heart flash

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn heart outline contains the words TACOS BEFORE VATOS in simple capital lettering. Small four-pointed sparkles and five-petal flowers sit around the heart, with a short starburst below its tip. The design uses single black linework on a white background with no shading or colour, and the heart fills the centre of the composition.

The hand-lettered sign went up over the griddle the same week the bus depot shut its night café, and Marisol Reyes swore it was only a joke for the lorry drivers. Nobody read it as a joke. She sold him two al pastor and told him the flowers were blocking the salsa. He stood in the drizzle with his cap dripping, asking whether a person could hold a tortilla and a grudge at the same time. Marisol flipped the meat with the long knife and said the grudge was his problem, the tortillas were hers, and the queue behind him was getting tired of both of them.

At half past eleven the cart ran out of onions and the carnations had wilted to brown fists. Teo came back with nothing in his hands, which was the first honest thing he had done all week. She passed him the last taco wrapped in foil, and on the foil she had drawn a small heart with the biro from her apron, because paper was free and the feeling was not.

He opened it at the bus shelter and found a pink sugar heart stuck beside the filling, the kind sold by the till for a penny, its message reading BE MINE in faded red. He ate the taco first. She had told him so.
