You'll think I've finally lost my mind, but the blue box turned up again on Saturday, wedged between the bucket of tulips and Mr Okafor's crates of wet cabbages on Hollow Street. Nobody else seemed to notice it. The rain came down so hard the awnings sagged, and the box just stood there with its lamp lit, a small dry square of blue in all that grey. POLICE BOX, the sign said, as if anyone had ever been arrested inside.

I went over with my umbrella, which turned inside out at the first gust, and knocked. Nothing. Then the door opened about two inches and a voice said, "Mind the poppies, they bruise," and shut again. I looked down and found I was holding a bunch of red poppies someone had pushed through the gap. Their petals were perfectly dry, though my sleeves were soaked through.

I've pressed one in this letter. Keep it somewhere warm. Tell Dennis the roses on the back table are his, already paid for, and that I'll be late on Thursday, possibly by a few decades. If the rain stops before then, look for a blue door under the chestnut tree and bring your own umbrella, because I suspect the box will want it back.
