TARDIS and roses on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A blue TARDIS police box with lit windows sits at the centre of the design, with a cream banner reading ALLONS-Y across its base. Two red roses with green leaves frame the lower corners, and pink streaks, small stars and soft clouds surround the box. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading give the blue box depth, and the design is photographed straight on against a warm, blurred background.

The police box had stood at the bottom of Mrs Okonedo's allotment since before the hedge swallowed the gate, and nobody in the village could say who had left it there. You have been told not to touch the door. You touch it anyway, on the Tuesday the frost lifts early, and find it unlocked and warm as a new loaf.

Inside there are no spades or sacks of bulb food, only a corridor that runs further than the hedge ever could. Red roses climb the lintel from the outside, bright as sealing wax, and the lamp in the little window keeps flickering as though it is deciding something. A man in a brown coat, or the shape of one, is pinning a cream ribbon to a brass rail. He hands it to you without looking up. The letters across it are careful black capitals: ALLONS-Y.

"Dig the bed by the wall first," he says. "Roses won't take unless someone has been kind to the soil before them." You do as you are told, forearms stung by bramble, and by dusk the bed has turned over like a page. When you look back the box has gone, and in its place a single bush has come up overnight, with a streak of pink light still caught in the leaves.

You keep the ribbon in the potting shed, folded in four. Every spring the bush throws out new canes, and every spring you walk the length of the path, lift the latch, and say the word aloud to the empty lane. Nothing answers. The roses do all the answering that is needed.
