Tattooed forearm holding a pineapple on a tabby cat

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A tattooed hand and forearm hold a pineapple crown on the head of a grey tabby cat that looks towards the camera with wide eyes. The tattoos on the forearm and hand are thin black linework, including a looped knot-like design, small symbols and a few simple leaf or eye shapes. The image is in colour, with the cat's grey fur and the pale background set against the mostly black ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third night of the Michaelmas fair, the tabby had decided the ring-toss pineapple belonged to her, and nobody on the field had the nerve to argue with a cat who stared like that. Maud Pelham had found the fruit in a crate at a Bristol market, its leaves stiff and blue-green as a sailor's flag, and she had nailed it to the top of the prize board because a fair without one bright thing looked like a funeral.

Nobody had won it in six seasons. The rings were rope, the pegs were painted to look sturdier than they were, and Lenny the rigger swore the knot holding the board had been tied by his grandfather and would outlast them all. The cat, who was called Sixpence because she had come aboard the wagons for the price of a pie, took to sitting on the counter between customers, watching the rings the way other people watch the weather.

On the Saturday, a boy of about nine paid his penny and threw badly, and the ring went wide and struck the cat's flank. She leapt straight up, twisted in the air, and came down on the crown of the pineapple, which slid from its nail and settled on her head as neatly as a hat at a wedding. The boy gasped. Maud started to reach for it. Sixpence froze, eyes huge and gold under the lamps, and did not move at all.

Maud let her keep it. She wrote the boy a card for the next free go and told him the fruit had been won fair, which was true enough. When the generator coughed and the lights went down across the field, the last thing Maud saw was the cat picking her way between the caravans with the crown still on, a small, grave king of the ring toss, tail held high.
