Teacup with steam on the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small teacup with three wisps of steam rising from it is drawn in thin black linework on the back of a hand. The lines are even and the design is outlined only, with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits against plain light skin and a white background, with the hand angled diagonally across the frame.

The kettle at Sealark House has only one setting, and Mrs Pardoe has never once in thirty years let it go cold. You come down at six, when the gulls are still arguing over the bins, and find her already at the back step with two cups on the sill, steam curling off both as though the morning were thinking about it.

"Lodgers take sugar or they take nothing," she says, and pushes one across. You take it black. She nods as if you have passed some small test.
The rooms above are full of people who have come to the coast to be unseen for a week: a widowed signalman with a crossword he never finishes, two art students who quarrel about light, a man from Leeds who sends a postcard every morning to nobody. Mrs Pardoe knows what each of them takes in their tea and what they are running from, and she never asks which is which.
On the last morning of the season the storm goes out to sea and leaves the sky rinsed and pale. You find a cup left on the step, still warm, with a note under the saucer in her looping hand: Stay for the next one. Three wisps of steam are drawn on the paper beneath, the way a child draws them, and you realise the kettle was never really about the tea.
