Teal psi symbol on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A single teal outlined psi-shaped symbol sits on a forearm, with the two curved upper strokes sweeping outwards from a central upright stem. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is one flat teal tone against pale skin. The grey sweater sleeve fills the edges of the frame and the symbol sits centrally.

Brother Osric kept the ferry at Saltcote, where the fen river parted around the abbey's willow island and came back together below the mill. The old monks said the upright stem was the true channel, and the two curved arms were the waters that left it and found their way home again. Nobody at the abbey could say who had first cut the sign into the landing post, only that it had been there longer than the bell.

Each spring the abbot sent a lay brother with a pot of woad and copper dye to freshen the marks on the causeway stones. One year a girl called Tamsin, who sold eels from a basket at the ferry steps, asked why the sign split into three when a river only ever split in two. Osric scraped the dye from his thumb and told her the first prior had drawn it that way after a flood took his brother's boat, so that every traveller would know which water to trust and which to fear.
That autumn the rains came early. Tamsin climbed the landing post with a sharpened reed and an ink pot, and she drew the sign again, but this time she left the outer arms as bare outlines so the grain of the wood showed through. Osric asked her why she had made it so faint. She said a sign that closed every gap would only dam the water up, and the river had to be let through somewhere.
The flood rose to the second step that night and no higher. In the morning the ferry was still tied to its post, and the bell over the abbey gate rang for the first time in three days, slow and even, as the boats went round the stem where the thin green lines showed them the way.
