The kettle in Maud Pilling's kitchen had been boiling for four minutes when the first of the Bannister boys came round the back of the chapel hall, holding a tray of rock buns like a summons. Nobody in Thornleigh had ever seen the vicar's wife lose a bet, so when Maud took the blue teapot down from the top shelf, the whole committee went quiet and watched her pour.

The teapot had a lid shaped like a bud and a spout that curled up at the end like a question. It had come from her mother's sideboard, and her mother had got it from a woman who ran a tea room over the Co-op before it burned. Maud filled the pot to the brim, set it on the table, and sat down among the folding chairs with the calm of a woman who knew exactly how long a brew needed.

"Four minutes," said the Bannister boy. "That's too long for the good china."

"Then you can drink from the mug," Maud said, and lifted the lid. Steam rose in a soft column past the peony sprigs painted on the side, and somewhere under the table a saucer rattled against its cup. The committee leaned in. The whole village, it turned out, had been waiting for someone to stop pretending the cakes were fine.

She poured the first cup for herself, and the second for the boy, and then the third, very slowly, for the empty chair at the head of the table, the one nobody had sat in since the spring. The tea came out pale gold and perfectly clear. Nobody argued after that.
