Teddy bear and script tattoos on thighs
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A teddy bear with a red bow tie sits inside an ornate picture frame on the left thigh, shaded in brown and tan with some navy and red detail. On the right thigh, black and grey script lettering reads across the skin, partly hidden by the wearer's hand and clothing. The photo is framed from the hips down, with a blue polka dot underwear waistband and red and blue striped socks.

Ada's grandmother had a rule about the bear: he lived in the gilt frame on the dresser, bow tie straight, and he was never to be taken down for the orchard. The orchard at Pennick Farm ran down the slope to the brook, forty old Bramleys and a few Discovery trees that nobody had the heart to grub out. In late August the windfalls rotted sweet in the grass, the wasps came to drink them, and the children were sent out with baskets before the wasps got there first.

Ada took the bear anyway, the autumn her father went to the coast for work and did not come back for a long while. She carried him down under her jumper, past the pickers' ladders, and set him on the stump where the old apple had split in the winter storm. He was lighter than she remembered, his fur gone the colour of weak tea, one glass eye hanging by a thread of brown cotton.
Nobody came. The wind moved through the Bramleys. Then at dusk a boy she did not know was sitting on the wall with a paper bag of crab apples, and he asked whether the bear had a name. She said it was Mr Penhallow, because the frame had belonged to a Penhallow once. The boy laughed and threw a crab apple at the stump. It bounced off the bear's nose and rolled into the grass.
They gathered the fruit together until the light went. In the morning Ada carried the bear back up the hill. Her grandmother looked at the dirt on his paws and said nothing at all. She wiped the glass, hung him back in his frame, and straightened the bow tie with one finger.
