Texas outline in Texas flag colours on a foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a small tattoo of the state of Texas on the top of a foot, with the toes visible below. The state outline has a heavy black border and is filled with flat blue, white and red panels that follow the flag's colours. The plain background and soft framing keep the focus on the small design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bait shop sign had been cracking since the spring storms, and by August the paint on the Texas outline had gone the colour of old bruises, so Mercer sent you up the ladder with a tin of blue and a rag. 'Don't touch the white yet,' he said. 'Nothing sits on wet paint in this humidity.' You were nineteen and cocky, and you wanted to start with the red, the way you'd seen the bunting done over the fish market.

He made you lay the outline first. A heavy black border, thick enough to hold the eye, pulled round the state from the panhandle down to the bend where the river meets the bay. 'Colour is only colour,' he said, dipping his brush. 'The line is what people trust.' You worked the edge slowly while gulls argued over the bait tubs and a shrimper hosed down his deck below you.

By afternoon the panels went in, blue on the western flank, white across the top, red sliding under it like a sunset that never quite arrived over the Gulf. A man in a sweat-dark cap came up the quay asking whether it would survive a hurricane. Mercer said nothing survived a hurricane, but a good black line would at least be found afterwards.

Years on, you still repaint the state whenever the salt gets into the board. The black edge is always the last thing you check and the first thing your apprentices learn to respect. Mercer is buried above the tideline now, and when the tide comes up over the breakwater you can still see your first job on that wall, the line unbroken, the colours long since faded to nothing.
