Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small robin is tattooed on the outer ankle, shown in profile facing right with its legs visible below the body. The bird has a brown back and wing, a bold red breast, and a thin black outline with simple, clean linework. The background shows a dark floor and a patterned rug, and the photo is taken from a close angle with flat indoor lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The winter the river froze to glass, my grandmother's cellar was the only warm room in Harrowmere, and I was the one sent down for the coal. I was nine and thought myself very brave. Down there, among the sacks and the smell of wet earth, I found a robin sitting on the handle of the old copper pan, its red breast puffed like a coal itself. It did not fly when I came near. It only tilted its head and looked at me the way the schoolmaster looks at a sum he already knows is wrong.

I asked it what it wanted. Everyone said the robin could carry a wish up the chimney if you whispered it right, so I whispered that I wanted the river to thaw before my father came home from the salt pans. The robin hopped to the shovel, then to the scuttle, then to the iron grate, always looking back to see if I followed. At the grate it stopped, pecked once at a coal that was not quite black, and the coal split open with a little sigh of orange light.

When I carried the scuttle up, my father was already at the door, stamping snow from his boots, and the river behind him was running loud and brown. He never knew about the robin. I never told him, because the bird was sitting on the sill of the cellar window when I looked back, watching me go, and it winked. A robin does not wink. I have decided it was the frost in my eye, and I have decided I was right to be brave.
