Small heart tattoo on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A pair of crossed legs in blue suede platform heels, photographed against a pale wall with a stack of magazines at the lower left. A tiny heart tattoo in thin black outline sits on the ankle, the only tattoo visible. The composition is close and warm in tone, with the tattoo a small detail in the lower middle of the frame.

The dye vat in Ferriby Lane had been sulking since Tuesday, and Mrs Okonedo swore the damp was getting in under the shed door. Ruth Calloway dipped her thumb in the vat and held it up to the grey light. It was not the blue she wanted. It looked too much like a bruise and not enough like the sea off Scarborough in August.

The order had come in a card envelope with a lipstick mark on the flap: six pairs of court shoes in cobalt suede, platform soles built up the way her father had built them for the chapel organist, and a small mark stamped inside each heel. A heart no bigger than a lentil, drawn by hand with the thinnest pen Ruth owned. The customer had written only, Make them feel like they are walking on top of the water.

She mixed the vat again with woad from the bottom shelf and a spoonful of something Mrs Okonedo would not name. By Thursday the suede had taken the colour evenly, and Ruth stretched each upper over its last and stitched until her shoulders ached. On the fifth pair the heart had bled in the damp. She could have let it go. Instead she sat under the magnifier and redrew it, slower, so the line would hold through a year of wet pavements.

When the box went out on the Friday bus, she kept the sixth pair back and wore them to the cafe by the station, heels clicking on the tiles like a clock being wound. Nobody asked about the heart. It was the sort of thing you only noticed if you had made it yourself, and Ruth, sipping stewed tea, decided that was reason enough.
