Three black paw prints on lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

Three solid black paw prints sit in a loose diagonal trail across the lower back, just above the waistband of blue jeans. The prints are filled with black ink and show simple toe pads and main pads with no shading or grey tones. The warm skin tone and the textured denim fill the frame, with the tattoos placed near the centre.

Ada Penhallow had been reading the moor for forty years before the frost came down that January, and she told the lads at the Crown that a fox never lied in snow. It walked where it meant to walk. Three prints in a loose line, then nothing, then three more a yard off, as if the animal had stepped out of one place and into another without bothering with the ground between.

Her grandson Tom thought it was a badger, or a dog gone feral from the Hardy farm. He had a torch, a bad knee and a habit of talking over her. She let him. They followed the trail from the gate at Lower Scarrow up past the old tin workings, where the prints turned and doubled back twice, neat as stitching.

At the third bend the prints stopped dead at the edge of the quarry pond, where the ice was grey and thin. Tom swung the torch across the far bank. Nothing. Ada crouched, pressed her glove into the last print, and shook her head slowly.

"Doesn't go on," she said. "Goes in, or goes home."

Tom laughed, then saw her face and stopped. They walked back down in silence, and when they reached the gate the trail had gone, filled in by a fresh skin of snow, except for three small prints by the latch, pointing back the way they had come.
