Now sit close, because the snow's coming off the Pennine tops and it won't wait for anybody. Old Harry Pell had a collie called Moss, black as a coal scuttle, and she was the best worker this side of the beck. Come the January of the great freeze, she went out at first light after a ewe that had broken through the hedge, and she didn't come back by dark.

Harry lit the lantern and went looking. The snow had drifted to the top of the gate posts and every hollow lay white and smooth as a pudding cloth. Out past the sheep pen, under the blackthorn, he found prints. Five toes in a neat arc, one great heel pad pressed deep, and every one of them filling with blue shadow. He followed them across three fields, through the frozen ditch and up the lane past the chapel, where the trail stopped dead at the door of the old lambing shed.
He pushed the door. Inside, the ewe stood over two new lambs steaming in the straw, and Moss lay curled against the wall with her nose tucked under her tail, the way she slept when she had done a thing right. One paw had split on the ice and left a red smear on the boards. Harry knelt, wrapped it in his scarf, and said nothing for a long while.
Every winter after, when the first flakes fell, he walked that lane before breakfast and set his own boot beside the old prints, just to see whether the ground still remembered the way home.
