Outlined triangle with two bars on the wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm, with a hand resting above it and a teal sleeve below. The design is an outlined triangle pointing downward, with two thick horizontal bars sitting inside it. The linework is solid and even, in black ink only, set against a plain indoor background.

The sign above the Halting Post has hung point-down for as long as anyone in the valley can remember, a black triangle my grandfather nailed to the lintel with two iron bars across its middle. When I asked him what the bars were for, he said they were for holding things in, and then he went back to salting the pig as if that settled it.

The snow came on the third day of February and did not stop. The road shut at Cold Ghyll by noon. By dusk we had eleven travellers in the common room: a carter with a lame mule, a priest who would not stop apologising for the cold, two sisters selling thread, and a clerk from the lead mines who ate four bowls of my broth and asked for a fifth. The wind found the sign every quarter hour and shook it on its chain, a sound like a dropped spoon ringing in a bucket.
At midnight the priest followed me out to the yard with a lantern. He asked about the bars, and this time I climbed the ladder to see. The iron was not decoration. Each bar was a brace, bolted through the sign and into the lintel, and my grandfather had welded them the winter after a gale tore the old board off and dropped it through the cart shed onto a sleeping horse. The horse lived. The sign never swung loose again.
In the morning the thaw had begun to drip from the eaves and the valley was white to the ridge. I took a lump of soot from the stove and drew the triangle on the back of the stable door, point down, bars across. Then I looked at the number of people still asleep under my roof and added a third bar, because the inn was holding more now than it had been, and the wind would not be asking my permission.
