Three music notes on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of three black music notes sits on the outer side of an ankle. The notes are drawn with thin, even linework and filled solid black, with no shading. The skin is pale and the background is blurred grey pavement, with a pink trouser cuff at the top and a sandal strap across the bottom of the frame.

Mind the third step, it sings if you tread on it wrong. Hold the lamp low, girl, and don't look down the well, the sea is always listening up there. You asked about the horn, and I'll come to the horn, but first you must know about the three pipes.

Old Eli Crane kept the light at Scarrow Head for thirty-one years, and for most of them the fog horn was a bellows and a brass throat that sounded like a cow in trouble. Ships heard it and never knew which rock it meant. Then Eli's wife Marta, who salted herring on the slipway and hummed while she did it, taught him a little falling tune of three notes. He cut three pipes to match them, one long, one short, one longer again, and blew that tune into every fog for a decade. The fishermen learned it. They steered by it the way you'd steer by a name called across a street.
Then came the winter the fog would not lift for nine days, and the boats came home by listening alone. On the ninth night Eli climbed the tower with his hands raw and blew the tune until his chest ached, and from somewhere below the cliffs, very faint, came the same three notes back, whistled thin through fingers.
He went down the wet stair with the lamp swinging. In the cove stood Marta, soaked to the knee, a net over one shoulder. She had never left the Head at all. She had only taken the cliff path the wrong way in the mist and found herself stuck on the far side of the rocks, so she had been whistling his tune all those nights, so he would know where she was.
So there, that's your horn. Now mind that step.
