Three small star tattoos behind the ear
Other · Black and grey · Photo
The main photo shows three small solid black five-pointed stars clustered behind an ear, beside a stud earring. The collage also includes a large drawing of three black stars on white and a photo of white sheets with similar stars on artificial grass. The stars have solid fills with no shading, and the image is entirely black ink.

The sheets from the mainland arrived in a brown envelope gone soft at one corner, and Ada Corrie spread them across the kitchen table to see what the damp had done. Three black stars survived on each square, cut from a template her grandfather had drawn in pencil on the back of an old tide table. He had never managed a straight ray in his life. Every star leaned a little, one arm always longer than the others, and the mainland printer had copied the wobble faithfully.

For eleven summers she had sold these to visitors off the ferry. They pressed them behind their ears where the sun didn't reach and the sea wind couldn't tug them loose, and they laughed at how small and serious the stars looked there. Nobody asked why three. Ada never told them that the cluster was the one her grandfather steered by in January, when the harbour lamp was out and the fog sat on the water like wet wool. He would say, "Three stars and the Skerry bell, and you're home."
The boat had not gone out since the autumn. Ada took the last sheet down to the harbour wall, where the grass grew thick over the old slipway, and laid it on the green. The stars looked nothing like the sky. They looked like something a child had cut out of paper for a school window. She peeled one free, licked the back, and pressed it to the cold glass of the lighthouse keeper's cottage, facing the sea, where any boat coming in from the north-west could see it.
