Three stacked circles with landscape scenes
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil and ink drawing of a stacked tattoo design, with three circles linked by a fine vertical line and small dots. The top circle holds a concentric swirl, the middle circle shows a rocky mountain range under cloud, and the bottom circle shows a pine forest with a small figure standing among the trees. The shading uses stippled dots and fine hatching in black and grey on a white background.

Dear Tom, the last down train pulled out at twenty past six and took the platform lamp with it, so I am writing this by the stove in the booking hut with the door propped open for the smell of rain. Mr Ferrier says I am to lock up at seven whether you come or not, but I told him you would be on the last one, and he grunted in the way that means yes.

I have done you the three drawings you asked for, the ones to take to Leeds so you remember us. The top one is the bracken at the bottom of the cutting, the way it unrolls every May as if someone is winding it from underneath. The middle one is the high ridge from the end of the platform, with cloud sitting on it like a lid. You always said you could never tell which peak was which, so I have marked the tallest with a dot. The bottom one is the pine wood where the track bends, and I put a figure among the trees because that is where you used to walk when you were meant to be at school.
The fine line running down from the bracken is the signal wire, the one Father strung along the fence the year you were born. I drew it so the three pictures would hang together the way we did, one above the other, not quite touching. The dots under the last circle are the ones I scattered on the path for you, one for every time you looked back at the station and I was still waving.
Count them when you step off the train. The figure is you, going home the long way through the trees, and I will be standing on the platform when you come round the bend, same as always.
