Star trail tattoos on feet

Other · Black and grey · Photo

Several feet are shown on a dark surface, each with a trail of black star tattoos. The stars are a mix of solid and outlined shapes that decrease in size as they move along the foot toward the toes. The ink is black on skin tones, with a plain, uncluttered composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry-woman Idris counted the stars on the salt path the morning her brother failed to come home. There were seven black marks pressed into the crust, each one smaller than the last, running from the heel of the road toward the water where the toes of the land went under. Her brother Tam had walked that way with the goats. The goats had come back alone.

Her grandmother had a saying for such trails. The sky, she said, was too heavy to stay up forever, so it let its stars slide down the sides of the world one at a time, and they went looking for the lowest place they could rest. Toes were the last place a star could reach before the sea. Whoever followed a trail to its smallest mark would find what had been lost, or find the star that had taken it, which amounted to much the same thing.

Idris took a lantern, a coil of rope and the bread knife, because her grandmother had also said knives were good for cutting dreams loose from the salt. She followed the marks past the drowned fence posts and the bleached skull of a ram. The stars grew fainter and closer together. At the last one, a pale hollow in the crust no bigger than a thumbnail, she knelt and found a wet footprint of her brother's, with a star pressed into the heel of it.

She did not wait for the tide. She set her own palm beside his print and drew the trail back up the path toward home, one star for every step, so the sky would know where to look when it came down again. Behind her the sea rolled in over the marks, and by morning the flats were smooth, except for a single bright point above the dunes that did not move at all.
