Through it all, it is well lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the words Through it all, it is well hand-lettered in bold black brush strokes on a white background. The letterforms are loose and upright with tapering strokes, and the word is underlined in the lower line for emphasis. The composition is centred with plenty of white space around the text, and no skin or body part is visible.

The hoarding man wanted something cheerful for the Marine Palais, so I told him the lettering would be done by Friday and went up the ladder with a rag in my back pocket and Dad's old sable brush tucked behind my ear. Below me the band was tuning on the sprung floor, a trumpet going sharp, then flat, then finding its note.

I had chalked the words three times before Mr Gilchrist, the owner, came to look. He read them with his lips moving. 'Through it all,' he said. 'Is that a hymn?' I told him it was a line my father used to paint on the back wall of every chapel and cafe he ever lettered, because he said people needed to read something true while they waited for their change. Gilchrist didn't ask what I meant by true, and I liked him for that.
Dad's method was simple and I never got it right. Load the brush heavy, drag it fast so the stroke thins out at the end, and let the dry bristles bite where the paint runs out. He always underlined one word and never the same one twice. Mine went under 'is', because he told me that was where a breath should fall, and a sign should let you breathe.
By the time the first couples came in for the Saturday waltz the letters were dry, black on cream, the underline pulled hard beneath 'is' where the paint had broken up into grey. Gilchrist stood under it with his hat in his hands and nodded once. I wiped the brush, still damp at the belly, and went down the stairs to dance.
