Hazel in six handwritten script styles
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
Six stacked samples of the word hazel written in different hand-lettered styles on a plain white background. The strokes range from thick, heavy brush lettering to thin, flowing pen lines with looped ascenders and tails. All are rendered in black ink with no shading or colour.

Mr Pargeter wanted the name on the stern of the Morning Tide by Saturday, and he wanted to see it first in six hands, the way his late mother had once tried out a shop sign in three different styles before choosing. So I sat at the bench with the brushes my father had left me and wrote Hazel six times down a sheet of cartridge paper, pressing hard on one and letting the next run thin as wet cotton.

The first came out heavy and squared, the sort of letters you'd paint on a lifeboat. The second had a tall h that leaned over the rest like a man checking a gate. I liked the fourth best, with its loose tail trailing off the edge of the paper, and I said so. But Pargeter tapped the sixth with his pipe stem. It was the one where the h dropped to the baseline and the z looped back on itself, as if the writer had stopped halfway through a word to say something else and then gone on.
"That one," he said. "Sounds like she's still talking."
He had not seen his daughter in eleven years, not since the spring she took the ferry to Douglas with one suitcase and a tin of his letters, unopened. I did not ask which hand she had written in. I simply painted the sixth, thin and slow, with the brush almost dry, and when I stepped back into the yard the name looked as though it had been started in one place and was still being finished somewhere else.
