The tinker by the bridge had a tray of needles and a pot of ink as black as a cellar, and he would prick a mark for a copper. The elder sister paid for two. The younger one asked why a heart and not a bird, and the tinker said a bird leaves, but a heart stays where it's put.

At the bar the guard turned the letter over, then looked at their bare shoulders, where the marks sat small and sharp as seeds. What are you declaring, he asked. The younger one said nothing. The elder said, one each, so we will always know which of us came back for the other. He stamped their papers without another word and let them go over the bridge.

The river took the mill, and it took the tinker's shed, and it took half the orchard. It did not take the hearts. Mind your coins, all of you, and when the guard asks what you are carrying, answer him plainly.
