You will not believe what came up the stairs of the Palais last Saturday. The band had just finished the quickstep and the floor was thick with steam from the radiators, and there, standing by the cloakroom hatch, was a grey creature the height of a coat stand, with round ears and a mouth like a slit in a cushion. Nobody else seemed to notice it. Mrs Pryce carried on selling raffle tickets as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

It held a cherry branch over its head like an umbrella, and every time the doors swung open, pink petals blew in across the parquet and stuck to people's shoes. Harold from the bakery kept trying to dance with one of them. I think the creature liked him. It followed him round the room in a slow, wobbling sort of waltz, its whiskers trailing blue where the lamplight caught them.

When the last waltz came on I went over and held out my hand, and it took it with a paw as soft as a wet leaf. We danced under the chandelier until the petals lay ankle-deep. Then it stopped, looked at me with those round eyes, and pressed a single blossom into my palm.

I have it in an envelope now. It is not dry yet, and it still smells of rain. Come up on the train in May and I will show you, and you can tell me I dreamt it.
