You asked me on Tuesday why the lift smells of wet fern, and I told you it was the damp. It isn't the damp. Since the flat on the ninth floor emptied, something has been coming up the stairwell after the rain, round and grey as a bread loaf, with whiskers that catch the strip lights. Mr Pryce on six swears it sat on his landing and hummed. I laughed at him at the time.

Last Thursday I went up with a torch because the bin chute had jammed again. On the eleventh-floor window ledge someone had left a cluster of red flowers in a jam jar, the petals already browning at the edges, and beside them a pair of blue wellingtons, one stuffed with moss. Nobody on that floor has a garden. Nobody on that floor has children either, not since the Dawsons left.

I stood there a while. The creature, if that's what it was, was nowhere to be seen, but the stairwell had gone quiet the way a church does after the organ stops, and the air was warm and smelt of rain that hadn't fallen yet.

I've left the window unlocked on eleven. I don't expect you to believe me. I only thought you'd want to know the flowers are fresh, and that the rain is coming back on Sunday.
