Traditional cat head with red flower on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cat's head with orange, black and grey fur, red ears and amber eyes is shown in front, with a red flower with a black centre and two green leaves beneath it. The bold black outlines and flat fills are typical of traditional tattooing, and the fur is shaded with fine streaks. The tattoo fills most of the frame on a forearm against a blurred indoor background.

Right, pull your chairs in, and mind the cat under the stage, because she's been listening longer than any of you. Every Saturday the Lantern Ballroom at Hollin Bay filled with sailors and shop girls, and every Saturday Mrs Pim took the same seat, the cold rim of the piano pedal, where she could watch the feet.

Now, Ronnie Marsh played trumpet that summer, and he had a red poppy pinned to his jacket for the lass he meant to dance with, Irene from the chip shop on Front Road. He never asked her. He kept saying tomorrow, and tomorrow kept being the next Saturday, and the poppy wilted a little more each time, its black heart going dull under the lights.
Then came the last waltz of the season. The lamps dimmed, the floor cleared, and Ronnie's nerve went out of him like air from a bellows. Mrs Pim had seen enough. She crossed the boards in one neat line, stepped up onto the piano, and nudged the flower from his lapel with her nose. Ronnie blinked. She walked the poppy along the keys and laid it down beside Irene's glove on the bench.
Irene looked at the cat, then at the trumpet, and she laughed the way you laugh when you've been waiting all along. They danced the waltz. Mrs Pim curled up on the piano lid and watched them go round, her amber eyes as bright as the bulbs, and not one of you has ever seen a cat look so pleased with herself.
