Hedgehog in glasses with flowers on a leg

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A bold traditional style tattoo shows a hedgehog wearing round glasses, with a flower crown above and a large red and orange flower below, with a small banner at the side. The black outlines are thick and the fill is flat, with red, orange, green and tan tones. A pomeranian dog wearing glasses sits beside the leg on a multicoloured rug.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Abernethy's hedgehog had read every book in the reading room twice by the time the spring fair came round, which was why the glasses were needed. Nobody in Coldharbour Cross could say where the spectacles had come from. A pedlar's gift, the vicar thought; a lodger's leftover, said the bakers. What everyone agreed on was that Bramble, as the hedgehog was called, would not go to bed until the lamp was out and the page was turned, and he would not be hurried about it.

Then the flowers began. Each morning a little crown of marigolds and poppies would appear on his prickly head, and by noon the lane outside the reading room would be banked with blooms that nobody had planted. The vicar wanted it stopped. The bakers wanted it stopped. Only old Tamsin Reeve, who had kept bees for fifty years, said nothing, and on the Sunday she carried a jar of clover honey up the hill and left it on the step without knocking.

On the last evening of the fair the hedgehog climbed onto the lectern, cleared his throat with a sound like a kettle, and read aloud from the parish register: every christening, every wedding, every burial, every name of every family that had ever cut hay on the common, in a voice so precise that the candle flames leaned toward him. When he reached the foot of the last page he closed the book, looked out over the crowd through his round lenses, and asked, very politely, whether anybody had thought to ask him what he wanted.
