Traditional film camera flash design

Traditional · Mixed · Flash

The image shows two versions of the same SLR film camera with a large front lens, a prism housing and the word Nikon on the body. Both are drawn with bold black outlines, heavy grey shading and highlights, and the lower version adds stippled texture to the body. A red glow sits beneath each camera against a mottled cream background.

Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Harrow Point would lend Mrs Adeyemi a light, so she learned to make her own. Her husband had left her a film camera with a heavy black body and a lens like the bottom of a jam jar, and a red darkroom lamp that she hung from the bathroom pipe. Every Sunday she photographed the lift shaft, the bins, the boys on the bench by the car park, the pigeons that came to the balcony rail. Each roll went to the chemist on Fallow Road, and each roll came back with the same grey smudge at the bottom of the frame where the building's shadow fell.

Her grandson Kwame took the camera apart one wet afternoon to see what was inside. He laid the pieces out on the kitchen lino in rows, like a patience game, and asked why the front of it was so dark. She told him the dark was there so the light only got in when she wanted it. He said that was daft, light got in everywhere. She let him believe it.

When the council came to clear the block, the men with clipboards asked for the photographs for their records. Mrs Adeyemi gave them a shoebox. Inside were eleven years of the estate, every window and fence post sharp as cut card, and at the foot of each print the grain had gathered into a patch of dark stipple, the way rain collects in a gutter. The men looked at it for a long time. Then they took the stairs down, because the lift had been switched off, and nobody asked her for the camera back.
