Traditional mandala flower on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large flower-like mandala sits on the outer thigh, with a central pink and red bloom surrounded by grey layered petals. Teal and dark navy leaves radiate outwards, with red accents along the leaf edges. Bold black outlines define the shapes, and the grey petals are shaded, set against striped fabric and a white surface at the top and bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Ashby carried the last basket up the orchard slope with the sun already gone behind Cold Hill, and she did not stop when old Tobias called to her from the gate. The grass was wet and the air smelled of bruised windfalls. Something in the middle of the orchard had been growing all August where the old well used to stand, and Tobias said it had come up through the stones overnight, which was no help at all.

She set the basket down beside it and saw what it was: a flower as wide as a cartwheel, its petals layered grey as river slate, each pressed against the next. At its heart a small red bloom pushed out like a coal breathing. Dark leaves spread from it in every direction, navy as deep water, with teal along their veins and red at their edges, as if each had been cut with a knife and left to bleed a little.

Who are you, Nell asked, because her grandmother had always said to ask a thing its name before you asked it for anything. The flower did not answer in words. Its outer petals lifted one after another, the way a hand opens when it has held a stone too long, and beneath them the earth was dry and cool and smelt of cider. Nell understood then that it wanted only to be counted, so she counted. She counted the petals and the leaves and the trees standing in their rows, and she gave each one a name her grandmother had taught her, and by the time the moon cleared Cold Hill every tree in Harrow Vale had turned its branches towards the well.

Tobias found her asleep in the grass at dawn with a red-edged leaf in each hand. The well was full to its lip with apples, and the flower was gone, leaving only a ring of grey petals pressed into the earth like a seal. Nell's baskets were never empty after that, though she never again picked up the last one.
