Cartoon cat chasing a mouse on the chest
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a person's upper chest showing a small solid black silhouette of a cartoon cat with a curled tail, paws outstretched, chasing a tiny mouse toward the lower right. The ink is flat black with no shading or greys, and the design sits in open skin to the right of a grey crochet top. The soft, neutral background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

By the third night the sugar had gone missing from the candyfloss van, and you were the one Mrs Abernethy sent after it with a broom and a short temper. The fair was packed into a damp field outside Lewes, the generator coughing, the ghost train groaning behind the hook-a-duck stall. Somewhere under the tarpaulins, a mouse was making a fool of you.

Her cat, Biscuit, was no help at all. He lay on the sack of caster sugar with his tail curled like a question mark and watched you crawl under the waltzer with the patience of a cat who knows the mouse always comes back. The lads on the rides called the mouse Pennywhistle, because you could hear it squeaking at the lucky dip long before you could see it. You saw it at last, a grey smudge clutching a crumb the size of a farthing, and you lunged.
It ran through the hall of mirrors, where a dozen of you chased a dozen mice into the cold, and then it bolted up the steps of the big wheel, the one that never stops for anybody. You followed it up into the dark, certain you had it cornered in the carriage. The carriage swung. Pennywhistle hopped neatly onto the rail, and you were left rocking above the field with a fistful of nothing.
At dawn the operator found you asleep in the gondola, still gripping the broom. Mrs Abernethy had the sugar back on her counter. Pennywhistle sat on the rim of the rubbish bin, nibbling a toffee apple with both paws, and Biscuit, who had watched the whole business from the sacks, yawned and went back to sleep.
