I am writing because the walls in Ashgrove House are thin enough that I have learnt your scales by heart. Every Thursday at half seven, the same three notes climb from your flat on the ninth floor and stop just short of the top, as if the piano is waiting for permission to go on.

I should confess something. I went down to the noticeboard by the lifts and copied out the council notice about the community choir at St Aidan's hall, because nobody else seems to read them. Enclosed is a sheet of manuscript paper I found in the bin by the recycling chute. Someone has drawn a treble clef on it in biro, but the curl sits too low and the lines wander off the page. I thought you might want to put it right, or at least tell me whether whoever drew it was a child or a sad old man like me.

The lift has been broken since March, so I climb the stairs now, nine floors of them, and by the fifth landing I am humming whatever you have been playing. Last week it was something slow I could not name, and I stood on the landing until a boy on a scooter shouted at me to move out of his way.

Come to the hall on Thursday. Bring the piano music if you have any, and I will bring the biro. If the choir is as dire as the notice suggests, at least we will be out of earshot of each other's kettles.
