Small green gem on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Colour · Photo
A small faceted gem shape, shown as a green diamond with a dark outline, sits at the centre of the back of the neck. The linework is fine and clean, with light shading across the facets. The tattoo is framed by bare skin and dark hair, with the rest of the image showing the upper back and a dark top.

Tuesday, the wet week. Master Ansel has finally let me set the Vell stone, though he stood over my shoulder the whole morning with his breath smelling of barley water, muttering that I hold the tang too steep. The stone is a sliver of green beryl no longer than my little fingernail, cut to a double point like two pyramids kissed at the belt. He calls it a diamond out of habit, though it is nothing of the sort, and he will not say where the rough came from.

By noon I had polished the second facet twice and the third not at all, because the lamp kept flickering and I kept thinking of the carter's boy who brought the parcel. He had a cough and a half-crown in his fist and asked me whether green things were bad luck in water. I told him only if you drop them. He laughed, and then he didn't. I have wrapped the finished piece in waxed linen and put it under the loose board beneath my stool, where I keep the things I am not yet ready to hand over.
Ansel came down at dusk, looked at the stone a long while, and said it was the best thing I had made. Then he asked for it back for the buyer on the Thursday coach. I said I would fetch it. I did not fetch it. Instead I took my glass and my last clean cloth out to the yard, where the rain had stopped and the sky was the colour of cold pewter, and I held the stone up to the one gap in the clouds.
Light went through it and came out the far side as a single green coin on the cobbles, steady as a held breath. I watched it until the cloud closed. Tomorrow I will tell Ansel it cracked in the polishing. It is the only lie I have ever wanted to keep.
