The last train has already gone, and you are still on platform two with the lamp in your fist when the iron begins to move. The footbridge over the sidings has carried commuters across Carrow Bridge Halt for ninety years, but tonight its black struts have slipped their rivets and are coiling down the stanchions like something waking. A spiked crest rises above the rail canopy. Two horns catch the sodium light, and a clawed foot grips the signal gantry with a sound like a gate being shut slowly.

Ada Pennock, who has sold tickets here since before the line was electrified, always said the thing lived beneath the junction and fed on delay. Every late train, every rail that buckled in frost, every missed connection was a scale it had shed to keep itself warm. You have never believed her. Now the dragon lowers its head until its eye, a ring of pierced iron, is level with your face, and it breathes out a fog that smells of wet coal and oil.

You hold up the lamp because you do not know what else to do. The creature studies the flame for a long moment, then uncoils one tail-spike at a time, laying each length along the track like a sleeper. It curls around the last signal, the tip of its tail flicking the green lamp to red and back again.

At 6.12 the first commuter train of the morning pulls in on time, for the first time in eleven years. The footbridge is back in its place, rivets tight, and the platform is quiet except for the tick of the cooling rails. Ada is already at the ticket window, and she does not ask what you saw. She only slides a single ticket across the counter and says, "Keep the lamp."
