Tribal spiral tattoo on a shoulder
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large black tribal design of spirals, hooked curves and blade-like forms sits across the top of the shoulder and upper chest. The linework is bold and solid, with finer dotted and hatched infill in the negative spaces. The skin is warm brown and the ink is a uniform blue-black, with the composition following the curve of the shoulder.

Rangi had carved the spiral three times on the paddle before his grandmother would let him near the adze for the blade. 'The curl must turn toward the water,' she said, pressing her thumb into the wood where his first attempt had gone wrong. 'A wave does not go straight.'

The forest behind the village gave them the wood: a totara felled after the spring storm, its grain tight and pale. Rangi carried it down on his shoulder with two cousins, past the drying racks where the nets hung like grey lace, and set it on trestles near the shore. For a week he worked it with gouges and rasps, tracing the hooked curves she had drawn in charcoal on a flap of sail cloth. The barbs along the edge he cut with a small chisel, sharpening the point until it could split a hair.
On the eighth evening the tide came in higher than anyone expected and the sea ran up the shingle to the foot of the racks. Rangi was still out there, holding a lantern over the paddle, deciding whether the last spiral was too tight. His grandmother came down the path with her stick and watched him for a long moment.
'Leave it,' she said. 'Water always finds the place where you hesitate.'
He set the chisel down. In the morning the paddle went into the boat, and when the boat slid out past the reef, the spiral turned under the surface like a thing that had been waiting to be seen.
